...intimate portrait of the artist ... performing, composing, and ruminating about his life and career. Ellington at home, on the road, and at his piano, in a world where nightly concert performances, impromptu improvisations, all-night composing sessions, and steak and potato breakfasts are all a part of Duke's daily routine ...assortment of standards including "Satin Doll" and "Take the 'A' Train," rare moments... late at night composing a new song..."...plenty of performance footage ... a bit on the grainy side, with audio that's less than stellar..."

home-video release - assembled from recordings of 2 1952 performances, includes "Caravan," "Sophisticated Lady," "Mood Indigo," "Solitude," "Cottontail," and seven more THERE WERE TWO LISTINGS ON AMAZON, THEY APEAR TO BE THE SAME BUT MAY NOT BE.

performance of the popular Broadway revue, built around more than two dozen great tunes from Ellington's songbook.

two-part television special

From the titles, I assume tracks 1 to 12 are the Ellington orchestra and the rest are Hampton's.

Tracks 1 to 7 are the Ellington orchestra and the rest are Hampton's. The Snader Telescription Corporation was formed in late 1950 to produce "miniature musicals" exclusively for t.v. Ellington did 7 of these. VIP's Boogie is combined with Jam With Sam. These recordings were made March 14, 1952. Ellington was contracted to receive $1,000, the reed players got scale for doubling, $105.98, the brass and rhythm got scale of $84.04. These telescriptions are the only time Louis Bellson was filmed as a member of the Orch, although later he appeared as a guest. See Stratemann for more details.

Compilation of many performances. Ellington is on 2 segments: ".. "Old Man Blues" with baritone saxophonist Harry Carney, and an imaginative medley consisting of "The Duke Speaks Out," the evocative "Black Beauty," and Cotton Club Stomp" in which the lovely dancer Fredi Washington--and the innovative mirror shots--steal the show." A reviewer says Beiderbecke is faking in the Whiteman footage.

A musical event recorded in Lugano Cathedral in honor of the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth CAUTION - THIS IS NOT DUKE NOR IS IT THE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA - THIS IS A PERFORMANCE BY ANOTHER GROUP MANY YEARS AFTER ELLINGTON'S DEATH.

The indicated timing on the last two tracks is suspect.

Ellington performance recorded in Denmark, features the Ellington Orch. includes two approximately 70-minute sets recorded a few days apart in 1971. Repertoire is similar, the performances are hardly identical-- includes Cootie Williams, Paul Gonsalves and Ben Webster.

2 programs filmed January 23, 1967 for Danish t.v. one is Duke jamming with an octet from his orchestra, the other is focused on Ellington's piano, solo and as a trio.

This movie, made in 1930, features the Ellington Orchestra. The following are the DEO recordings according to Stratemann's Duke Ellington: Day by Day and Film by Film.

Three ensembles are featured on this DVD: Duke Ellington and His Orchestra, The Mike Bryan Sextet, and The Bobby Hackett Sextet
