The 20th Duke Ellington International Conference

London, England,   May 2008

As promised, here are the photos I took during the conference. I apologize for the delay; I didn't return home until June 4, and sorting and labelling them took much longer than I had hoped. I finally decided to stop labelling them in the interests of getting them out to you without further delay.

Regrettably, I attended only the first of the six performances on May 26, the concert day, because I had to leave early. I didn't take any photos this day because my camera was packed away. However, the memory of Brian Priestley's trio and the music they made with Buster, John and Art will live on, as will the memory of Antony reaching inside the piano to release the stuck hammer every time Brian hit a certain note.

If other attendees would like to share their photos here, please let me know.

Clicking each "thumbnail" image will open the full sized image, which you may download. If you are in any picture(s) and want the photo removed or edited, or if you can identify someone I haven't named or have named incorrectly, please let me know which photo it is. If I haven't shown the photo number, you can right click and use Properties to get its filename. (Thanks to Sven Eriksson for naming a some members of DESS.)

Please forgive the blurred or poorly lit images. With poor vision, I must rely on the automatic features of the camera for focusing, and sometimes I was shooting too quickly for it to focus properly. Other times the focal centre was not the object of the picture. Shooting in low light without a flash was deliberate to avoid being too much of a distraction, but that has its downside too. Nevertheless, I think you'll find most of these images will bring back fond memories.

Often there are several similar photos because I used a motorized shutter to create sequences or to reduce the chance of an an unusable photo when someone is blinking. I kept several of these sequences because I found it hard to choose, and because the sequences are interesting if you put them in a slide show at about six frames a second. This is particularly so when a presenter uses his hands a lot, an instrumentalist plays a fast passage, or there's a dance sequence.

I propose to delete this webpage and the photos around September 30, so download while you can.
