Dear Benny Goodman collector,

Pleased to meet you. I'm Thore Mattison. For over 55 years I have been collecting the music of Benny Goodman and today my collection is one of Sweden's largest. I have 78 rpm records, vinyl reissues, CD-releases but also plenty of unissued material, broadcasts in particular.
I have now decided to share some of my goodies with fellow BG fans and have thus launched The Breakdown Record Society and a brand new CD label, SLIPPED DISC, which will provide a real bonanza for the advanced Goodman collector.

ONE RECORD LABEL - TWO SERIES:

The ZCD-series

This series will document BG in the recording studios of a well-known American company between August 10, 1939 and October 22, 1946 and I plan to present the material in a somewhat unusual manner too.
In September 1939 this record company began a practice of recording on 16" acetate blanks all the performances made at an individual session. The early ones contained only the performances. The standby and the studio talk were not recorded. Later on, everything was taken down including the breakdowns and the blow-ups of these sessions. When you consider the fact that over the years so much of the original metal work bas been lost, damaged or destroyed, these "safety recordings" remain our most productive source in searching for and finding material that has never been released before.
Now, for the first time, I am releasing the complete contents of these safety acetates on CDs and you'll have fun finding out what take that actually got issued on 78's as take "A". In many cases, both the A&R man and BG chose the final take as the good one or the "buy". (Back to the Top)

The BR-series

The sister series is even more exciting. Here you will get BG "live", in remotes from the radio studios, the concert stages and the ballrooms all over the world. You already know that the BG Camel Caravans of the late 30s were the greatest jazz series ever heard over any American network and thus you'll be happy to learn that the premier release in our BR-series will be a CD with two complete 1937 Caravan-broadcasts, uncirculated even among the staunchest BG-collectors!

The reviews in the trade press noted among other things:

"Right away, let it be known that the sound quality is excellent."
"This quintet was one of the finest ever assembled and the bonanza of having all these Goodman, Norvo and Wilson recordings assembled in such nice fashion is obvious."
- RUSS CHASE, IAJRC JOURNAL, Winter 1998

"...A fascinating portrait of jazz craftsmen at work. Each take bas subtle differences and a few of Benny's 50105 are strikingly different...
The sound on this set is apparently from the large discs themselves or the acetate safeties which the company used as a backup. As a result, the sound is clearer and "warmer" than the originals and even tests taken from the masters.
These discs... is a must for BG collectors and jazz researchers."
- RUSS SHOR, VINTAGE JAZZ MART, Winter 1998. (Back to the Top)
