Record labels that have the BIEM mark were printed in 1929 or later. BIEM (Bureau International des Societies Gerant Les Droists D'Enregisrement et de Reproduction Mecanique)was formed that year. BIEM is the international organisation representing mechanical rights societies. Mechanical rights societies license the reproduction of songs on behalf of composers, authors and publishers and their clients are record companies and other users of recorded music. The expression "mechanical right" origninated in the days when all reproductions were made with mechanical processes.
