While he recorded some sides for Victor before 1929, after Radio Corporation of America acquired the Victor Talking Machine Company in early 1929, Ellington signed an exclusive contract to record for that organization under the name "Duke Ellington and His Cotton Club" (source: Steven Lasker in DEMS bulletin 10/1, section 10/1-19). As can be seen below, however, Ellington continued to record for other companies, using other names:

The Jungle Band (Brunswick)
Mills Ten Blackberries (Velvet Tone)
The Harlem Hot Chocolates (Hit-of-the-Week)
The Harlem Footwarmers (Okeh)
From January to April the band played Sunday matinees at Club Harlem.

In the summer of 1929 the Band appeared in Ziegfeld's Show Girl at the Ziegfeld Theatre.

February 1929 marked the departure of the great trumpeter Bubber Miley, who had been such a major influence on Ellington. He continued to record prolifically, although not with Ellington, until mid-1931, and he passed away in May 1932. (A Miley discography is here)

On February 11, 1929, New York radio station WABC began to broadcast the band from the Cotton Club on Wednesday nights. The program was wired to stations across the country, exposing the band to a wide audience.

Recording dates are uncertain; Stratemann suggests August 12 to 16, 1929
The recordings were made at RCA Gramercy Studio, New York City. See details of these two records in the accompanying extract from Benny Aasland's 1954 discography The Wax Works of Duke Ellington

While barely legible, I kept this image because it's pretty.
New Desor lists only only one take but there were two, with master no. 9018 according to Benny Aasland's Wax Works. Jepsen's discography only says 4043, but page 10 of Timner's Ellingtonia gives a choice of Matrix 4063-A or B.

This label was used by Decca in the mid-1940s. According to 78rpmRecord.com, Brunswick-Balke-Collender sold its record division to Warner Brothers in 1930. In December 1931, Warner Bros. licensed Brunswick and Vocalion to ARC's new subsidiary Brunswick Record Corporation, subject to pricing constraints and a production quota. Columbia Broadcasting System bought Brunswick Record Corporation and ARC in 1938, In September 1939 it revived the Columbia label and reduced Brunswick production, discontinuing Brunswick in April, 1940. This violated the licence terms, so the Brunswick name reverted to Warner Bros. Warner Bros. sold the Brunswick and Vocalion names and all its pre-November 17, 1931 masters to Decca in May 1941. Decca then used the Brunswick label mainly for reissues for old Brunswick/Vocalion jazz and blues masters.
