**** **** ****

This first recording of Rockin' in Rhythm is beautiful.

While the composition stayed in the book forever, by the 1960s Ellington often gave it a lengthy piano introduction called Kinda Dukish, followed by a raucous band performance, the only saving grace being Harry Carney's clarinet solo.

Bluebird Records and Electradisk were created in 1932 as sub-labels of RCA Victor. Bluebird was originally an 8" record with a dark blue label, but the Bluebird and Electradisk labels were not a success (source, Wikipedia).

In Duke Ellington, A Listener's Guide, Eddie Lambert writes:
"The last title the Ellington band recorded in 1931 was The Mystery Song, the opening of which is a moment of pure Ellington magic. After a deliberately prosaic piano introduction, the brass section enters muted and pianissimo, playing suspended hamonics in a strangely shifting pattern. This passage is unique in Ellington's muisc, and the rest of the record, suffering somewhat from the Camden echo, fails to maintain this level of music-making, although the succeeding saxophone passage is excellent in its indolent ease and relaxation. A second take was issued in the late seventies, this has a better performance of the later parts of the score, but the first chorus is not improved by touches of clarinet and baritone saxophone."

ARC acquires Warner's labels
**** ****

Warner Bros. Pictures transferred its Brunswick, Vocalion and Melotone contracts, trademarks and catalog of master recordings to ARC in December 1931. As long as it succeeded in selling 250,000 Brunswick records annually, ARC was to pay WB a fee for any existing Brunswick inventory it sold and a royalty on any pressing it made from existing masters. It was able to issue its own recordings on those three labels for no charge, though, at no charge.

Result: As of 2011, any Brunswick masters recorded before Dec. 3, 1931 are controlled by Vivendi-Universal, and those made between Dec. 3, 1931 and the end of 1940 are controlled by Sony Music, on behalf of Sony-BMG.

The budget priced (+/- 25 cents) labels Banner, Conqueror, Jewel, Oriole, Perfect, Regal, and Romeo were controlled by ARC at the end of 1931. Brunswick was its prestigious label, selling at 75 cents. Brunswick recording sessions at the Brunswick studio at 799 Seventh Avenue ceased on December 21, 1931, and began again at the ARC studio in early 1932 at ARC's studio at 1776 Broadway.

3 Lazy Rhapsody
alternate title Swanee Rhapsody

Columbia 35834 (Album C38 side 1)
Matrix B11205-B

Steven Lasker's notes say some copies of Columbia 35834 use the master take which is misidentified as a previously unreleased second master. He writes this song originated as an accompaniment to When It's Sleepy Time Down South, and the two takes in the 11 CD release were originally titled Lullaby when they were recorded. The title was changed two days later to Lazy Rhapsody, then to Swanee Rhapsody, and labels were printed for both titles.Swanee was supposed to be used but a few copies of Lazy Rhapsody slipped out. When take B was issued on the red Columbia label in 1940, it was titled Lazy Rhapsody.

He also points out this Columbia album, released in 1940, was produced by George Avakian, but credited to John Hammond.

12" record allowing four and a half minutes of music rather than three minutes on a 10" record. This is the only 12" record made by Ellington in the 1930s, according to Steven Lasker, other than a two-sided version of Creole Rhapsody.

Recorded Feb.11, 1932
ARC session, NYC

Notes:
DEMS 12/1-32
One of the first jazz records in my life, over 50 years ago, was Creole Love Call, the 1932 Brunswick version. I never liked the idea, circulating at the time, of two different clarinet soloists, because it didn't fit with what I heard and I felt it unnecessary. I was glad and satisfied when DESOR decided for one man only and, better, when they changed from Barney Bigard to Harry Carney. Moreover, when Duke came to Italy in 1973, I met the guys in the band in Bologna and asked Carney about it. Just to be sure we were talking about the same thing he asked me if I meant the solo with the long descending glissando, thus showing that he was talking exactly about THAT PARTICULAR CHORUS, and then confirmed that IT BELONGED TO HIM. I believe this should close all arguments.
-Vittorio Castelli

In the old Desor, page 41, session 99, the description of Creole Love Call shows the first (5°) chorus by Barney Bigard and the second (6°) chorus also by Barney Bigard. So long ago, we did not yet make references to the sources of corrections when we implemented them in our notes. Anyway we corrected the first of the two choruses into Harry Carney. The second remained as being played by Barney Bigard. And indeed, listening to these choruses on take -A on CD 1 track 7, makes you believe that the soloist could be different from the one in the first of both choruses. But it could also very well have been Harry Carney. This difference is less convincing on the alternate take -B, CD 1 track 20. Now we have Harry's own statement about this second (actually 6°) chorus which has the mentioned glissando, I agree with Vittorio Castelli (and with the New DESOR) that we should make a correction in the liner notes by Steven Lasker on page 10 of his award-winning booklet for the Mosaic MD11-248, 11 CD release (DEMS 10/3-5). Chorus 5° and chorus 6° are both by Harry Carney.

On February 12, 1932, the band travelled to the west coast, arriving in San Franscisco on the 16th. On March 10th they were in Los Angeles, playing at the Orpheum Theater until approximately April 1.

Trombonist Lawrence Brown was recruited in Los Angeles during this trip.

The band returned to the Eastern states by April 6, when they played for two nights in Syracuse, followed by an engagement in Hartford before returning to New York.
