New Desor numbers explained | Ellington 78 rpm Labels |
Last update 2011-04-10 |
There were four series of V-Discs. The Army was first off the block in late 1943. The Navy released its first V-Discs in the summer of 1944, and the Marines followed soon after. After September 1945, all V-Discs were produced for all the forces.Red, white and blue label 78 RPM VDisc 12" records were made for 7 years in the 1940s and supplied monthly to U.S. servicemen around the world. They were not sold commercially and were to be destroyed after the end of the war. While many were, lots survived and a complete set is in the Library of Congress.
The Ellington V-discs were studio sessions, radio broadcasts and live performances recorded between 1934 and 1947. Some were broadcast in the Duke Ellington Treasury Series on ABC radio's Blue Channel. Eddie Lambert's "Duke Ellington: A Listener's Guide" says no Ellington recordings on Vdisc were recorded expressly for the Vdisc program. Richard Sear's book "V-discs : a history and discogaphy" (Greenwood Press 1980) says:"[George T.] Simon, a V-disc producer, asked Duke if he would let the band make V-discs. Duke suggested he 'ask some of the guys'. 'And so I went over to Harry Carney and Lawrence Brown, whom I'd known for years, and asked them. Their reply in essence: 'George, if you are asking us to do this for free as a personal favor for you, of course we'll do it. But if you are asking us to do it for the Army, forget it - not when you consider the way they have been treating our people.'"
