By March 30 it was back in Los Angeles for a recording session at the CBS studio (New Desor session DE9025) but went east April, via Dallas (April 13), Shreveport, Alexandria, Houston, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Pine Bluff, Greenville, St. Louis, Peoria, Sheboygan, Appleton, Kenosha, and Oshkosh (May 9). While I don't know if the band continued east, Duke was in the studios in New York on May 14.

After an appearance at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana on May 17, the "Ellington troupe" returned to California, arriving May 20.

The band remained on the west coast for the rest of the year, rehearsing for and appearing in Ellington's theatrical review Jump for Joy at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, which began a string of 101 performances on July 10.

Lambert describes this as "an essay in Tizol's exotic vein,... features Nance on violin and the composer on valve trombone. This piece is typical of the kind of exotic Ellington which some jazz enthusiasts find extremely irritating. The musical content is anything but profound, and the odor of the greasepaint in the playing is clearly deliberate. But the humor is strictly poker-faced."

While I treasure Mr. Lambert's book Duke Ellington, A Listener's Guide, a comment like this suggests he wore "jazz" blinkers. The piece is a well-performed, delicate composition with an enchanting reed section riff.

Lambert:"some of the finest solo alto ever recorded. Hodges, at his magnificent best, plays with an endless flow of invention, perfect melodic poise and abundant rhythmic energy. His mastery of his instrument is complete. Every musician in the group has the Hodges jump style down to perfection, but special mention must be made of Blanton, who gives one of his best performances."

Jimmy Blanton's health made him leave the band in November 1941, and he was replaced by Junior Raglin.
(Blanton died on July 30, 1942.)

In November or December 1941, Ellington and his band were filmed in six "Soundies" film shorts that were played in coin-operated machines.
