New Desor numbers explained

Ellington 78 rpm Labels
1933 – 1934 recordings

Last update 2012-06-16

Caution:
The band's activity presented on this page outside the recording sessions is not reliable. It comes from several sources, and is not all adequately documented. I present it here only to give readers an impression of how busy the band was when it wasn't recording, and this information is not to be relied on for research.

For example, my references to week-long engagements may mean just 6 nights; a series of one-nighters may include a few longer stays, and I don't provide detail of multiple events on the same day.

***

The band began 1933 with a week-long engagement at New York's Albee Theater

Adelaide Hall with Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra

New Desor DE3301d

Recorded Jan. 7, 1933, ARC session, NYC

The last Brunswick recording session with the Duke was actually in 1931. Brunswick stopped doing its own sessions from December 3, 1931 when ARC was taking over its operations and stable of labels. This take, Take D, was not released by ARC at the time, although it was released on Blu-Disc 5001. This unusual label dates from 1955 or later; that was when Columbia introduced the "Walking Eye" logo faintly seen at the top of the image. It would be interesting to know why Columbia would press a 78 rpm record when 45s and LPs were already well established.

***After this session:

Ted Yates, "Courier Columnist Makes Trip to Pittsburgh with Duke and Band," Pittsburgh Courier, 14Jan33, sec2, p6
Duke Ellington puffed on a mild Havana cigar in the drawing room of the special Pullman that was bringing his band to Pittsburgh, thence to Cincinnati and afterwards, to St. Louis, where they will fill dance and vaudeville engagements."

On January 9, the band appeared at the Pythian Temple in Pittsburgh, where Ellington was crowned The King of Jazz for the second year in a row by the Pittsburgh Courier.

On January 10, the band left for Cincinnati, followed by a dance engagement in Evansville (large crowd) on Friday January 13. From January 14 to either January 28 or February 3, it played at the Club Avalon in St. Louis (Missouri). "Ellington's is the first colored band to play the spot." The Chicago Defender published a report on February 4 that Ivie Anderson left the band twice during this engagement, flying to Chicago.

Next that band played a week at the Stanley Theatre in Philadelphia. Its next known location is New York, where it had recording sessions on February 15 and 17.

***During the later part of the Cotton Club engagement, the band did a benefit concert at the Lafayette Theater in New York, and filmed the Paramount short "A Bundle of Blues."

On June 2, 1933, the band embarked on the S.S.Olympic (sister ship to the Titanic) for its first overseas tour.

Arriving in Southampton mid-day on June 9, they took the train to London, where British bandleader Jack Hylton arranged a reception at his home in their honour. The band worked in Great Britain until July 24, performing in Bournemouth, London, Streatham, Brighton, Hastings, Liverpool, Bolton, Blackpool , Glasgow, Harrogate, Birmingham, and Margate, some of these cities more than once.

Mr. Field's webpage says there were two takes of this souvenir record made when Ellington first visited England. The label is gold and orange but it doesn't scan well.

This record is Duke being interviewed by P. Mathieson Brooks, editor of the ‘Melody Maker.’ The recording was made for ‘Levy’s – the Home of Music’, a specialist record shop in Whitechapel, London. To get the disc, you had to buy ten Ellington records from Levy’s in one go

On July 24, the band went to Holland, playing two concerts there on July 25. Their whereabouts on July 26 is not documented in Stratemann, but they arrived in Paris the evening of July 27, playing concerts at Salle Pleyel on July 27, 29 and August 1.

They embarked from Cherbourg, France, on August 3, on S.S. Majestic, bound for New York. Upon arrival, they began a series of one-nighters, returning to the Brunswick studio for the final record date under their current contract, on August 15.

The band played April 20 to 26 at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. On April 27, it played at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. Duke appeared at a ball game in Berkely on his birthday, April 29, where game was stopped as he stood on the pitchers mound, spoke to the crowd of 4,000 and threw two pitches to Snakehips Tucker. That evening, the band played a dance at Sweet's Ballroom in Oakland. Ken Vail's Duke's Diary reports it played at the Oakland Auditorium the next day. The band was back in Los Angeles May 7 and 8 to work on Belle of the Nineties.

On May 12, the band played a week at The Music Box in Portland (Oregon), followed by a week at The Music Hall in Seattle. While there it also played a dance at The Finnish Hall in Seattle on the 21st and from the 26th to the 28th of May, it played at The Music Box in Tacoma.

Next, it went east to Idaho Falls (May 30), Salt Lake City (The Orpheum, 4 shows daily June 1 to 3), and Ogden.

A week-long Denver booking for June 7 appears to have been cancelled; instead the band arrived in Chicago that day for a week layover, then continued east via Canton (Ohio?) - a week at Loew's Theater, and another week starting June 22 at the Penn Theatre in Pittsburgh.

It played from June 29 to July 12 at Capitol Theater on Broadway in New York. From July 13 to 24 it played Loew's Orpheum in Boston and then began a tour of the south, appearing at Roanoke, Petersburg, Richmond, Durham, Goldsboro, Columbia, Charlotte, Charleston, and Atlanta. (Local papers in these cities need to be checked to verify these dates.) On July 30 it appeared in Louisville, then Birmingham, Chattanooga and Indian Lake (Ohio). It may also have appeared in Evanstown and Bloomington during this tour.

On August 18, the band played Chicago for two days, then Dayton, Columbus and Erie, before opening the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto on August 24 and 25. From there, it played one-nighters in Berwick, Pittsburgh, Bemus Point, Canton and, on Labor Day, in Reading.

It was thought to have been at the Majestic Theater in Bridgeport, Connecticut for a week beginning September 2, but researchers seem to have established it played there from September 7 to 13 (see DEMS 09-1b). This may conflict with the next recording session in New York on September 12, although Bridgeport is not far from New York.

This strange recording, including Ellington's odd lyric, includes clarinet solos by Bigard and Carney. It's hard to tell, but Carney may be playing an alto clarinet or basset horn for his solo.

The print position is again slightly different, suggesting a different pressing run. The image originally had a green tint which I've tried to correct for, but this result is not necessarily right.

The band is reported to have played at the Elm Street Theater in Worcester September 14 - 20, at the Palace Theater in Hartford September 21 - 27, and in New Haven September 28 - October 4.

A New York Age ad places the band in New York's Apollo Theatre from October 5 to 11 for the Clarence Robinson revue "Fast and Furious." It is suggested in DEMS 05-2 that they may have played 4 shows a day here.

In DEMS 05-2, a researcher suggests the band recorded the soundtrack for Symphony in Black in October 1934, probably between the 17th and 24th.

On October 12 the band began a series of primarily one-nighters in Boston, Manchester, New London, Springfield, Washington, Allentown, Baltimore, Washington, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and New York, followed by a week (Nov 30 - Dec 6) at Washington's Howard Theatre and a week (Dec 7 - 13) at the Apollo in New York. It appears to have played in Woodbridge from Dec 15 to 18, and to have wrapped up the year at the Oriental Theater in Chicago.
